Summary
Bask Bank was a Drupal site that was ready for a refresh. Initially built quickly to get an idea off the ground amiss historically low interest rates and having passed through multiple teams, the Bask Bank was a hodgepodge of concepts and ideas. For the refresh, the primary goal was consistency in brand and function.
Rebuilding the site
We didn’t start from scratch on this, we built up from existing components. This meant first laying out a plan. We determine what would be staying and what would be going. Then we determined what could be changed without effecting the existing, live site and what would have to wait to be turned on at the end. We ended up reconstructing 30+ components to match the new brand and to function more consistently. We also had to build 5 entirely new components including 3 advance savings estimators which each required their own custom Drupal module in order to meet their desired design.
Accessible For All
The biggest change to the new site was a complete overhaul of functionality to ensure that every page and component was ADA compliant. This meant updating each component to work with screen readers for the visually impaired. The site also needed to be fully navigable with only a keyboard for physically challenged individuals. And all color schemes needed to be distinct enough that color blind individuals could see every element. Once completed, the site went through a full inspection and was officially certified as ADA compliant.
Managing the project
Large scale projects like this one take a equally large scale management effort. For this project, we developed a clear roadmap at the start of the project and included milestones for each major feature. We then scheduled a weekly check-in with all primary stakeholders. As the project progressed, we ran into new issues (items that were missed or unexpected occurrences) which we discussed in the weekly check-ins. With this we were able to revise the plan as we progressed. Given we had left plenty of buffer room in the initial plan, we were still able to finish on schedule despite the additional requirements.
